Proposals via the official online fill-in Application Form are to be completed, submitted, and verified by
the School Principal before 4:30 PM, April 1. An example application can also be accessed from this site. Proposals that do not meet all of the requirements outlined in the proposal guidelines and this form are subject to disqualification. Notification of recipients on or about July 1. Awards ceremony on or about August 25.

Project Abstract

Taming the Internet is a project in which teams of 8th grade students will conduct in-depth Internet science research.  Each team will address one of four science subjects, sort out the relevant facts, and prepare a class web site for the benefit of the other teams.

Project Activities

There are two 8th grade teachers in Delwood Middle School.  Each teacher presently has one computer in his or her room.  A second computer will enable a teacher to break the class into two teams and assign each team a subject area to complete.

The four subject areas to be addressed in 8th grade science are dimensional analysis, the electromagnetic spectrum, force-power-energy-work, and properties of elements as shown in the periodic table.  The teacher will guide the research to insure all learning objectives are met.  The teacher will then guide the students through the development of a web page with appropriate links to pertinent material and web sites.  This is a necessary step because, for example, there are 2,080,000 hits by Google for the term “global warming”.  This number of references is unusable without screening.  The students will be taught both the mechanics of making a web page as well as the art of making an attractive and useable web page.  After the web site is completed, each class team will teach their material to their peers in the other team.  Each class will then test on the two subjects addressed to date.
  
After the first two subjects are covered in each class, each class will again be split into two teams and the process repeated using the remaining two subjects.

Sep. 2009 – Set up the computers, install software.
Oct. 2009 – Apr 2010 – Research the internet and create four web pages in each of the two classes.
20 Jan. 2010 – Submit the midterm report in the prescribed format prior to 4:30 PM.
Spring 2010 – Prepare a Power Point slide show for the STEDTRAIN project presentations which shows the attending teachers how the grant permitted the greater learning of science, internet, and web page development.

Method of evaluation of the project outcome

(i.e. how the benefit to the children is to be evaluated)

The two additional computers and the web site development software permitted each student to more fully participate in both the research and the website development.  Each 8th grade class will tested on the content of the science areas after they have made their presentations to the other team.  Students will thus learn not only by research but also by peer teaching.  Web site development will be tested after all four science areas have been taught.  Students will be asked how the “do it yourself” approach helped them learn.  They will also be queried as to what they learned from teaching their peers the two science subjects.
